Parachute Jump Reconstruction

In October 2002, stabilization of the Parachute Jump, the last remaining structure from Steeplechase Park, was begun. The approximate cost of project could be as much as $5 million. While returning the ride to operation is not part of the plan, it is also not out of the question either.

The Parachute Jump was originally from the 1939 New York Worlds Fair and was moved to its present location here in Coney Island to become part of Steeplechase Park. It ceased operation in 1968. It has been known as Brooklyn's Eifel Tower for generations of Brooklynites.

At 271 feet tall, it is the tallest structure in Brooklyn, that is until they brought in a crane taller to help dismantle the steel structure.

On the following pages, you will see photos I took on Nov.23, 2002. First up is a photo of what it looked like for years.
